How is Henna paste prepared?
Henna leaves are dried up and powdered and a paste mainly with water is prepared. Leaves must be powered very fine which helps in making very intricate designs. Powdered henna is mostly available in the market, so buy the henna powder, take a bowl, pour the required quantity and mix it with water, mix it well with a spoon, make a paste (with good consistency like a toothpaste). Lemon juice or teas can be used to make the paste of henna. Another important thing is that to get better results henna can be prepared in pure iron utensil. Leave the paste for overnight in the iron utensil before use and see the best results.
How henna is applied? How to get the dark henna color?
You can make a cone of a plastic sheet, pour in the paste, close the end tightly with a thread or rubber band and just before application cut a very small part from the top of the cone. Remember it has to be very small cut otherwise you will not be able to make intricate designs. Lavender oil can also be applied on the area before applying henna. Now when everything is ready start applying henna. Start with your palms. Soles and palms shows the best henna color as these parts have thick skin layer so they take most of the lawsone present in the paste. After application spray sugar and lemon juice to prevent it from falling. Once it dries up and starts falling off on its own it means that time is over and you can wash your hands now. Initially it will show orange color but gradually within a day you will see a dark red color. The stains fades away slowly after a weeks time. Warming up and less use of soap helps the color to stay for long.
When is henna applied?

Henna can be applied anytime but in countries like India henna is mainly applied during weddings, specially for the bride it is a must to have henna on her hands and feet, Indian women also apply henna during festive seasons like Karwachauth, diwali, teej etc. Henna is famously known as 'Mehndi' In India.
How much safe is henna for skin?
Pure green powdered henna is completely safe for skin, allergies with henna is very rare.
What are the uses of henna?
Henna is used as a dye to color the skin or hairs. It gives a temporary orange color to hairs once applied. You just need to make a paste of henna and keep it aside for few hours, after it is ready for use apply it on hairs with the help of a brush just like the way we use hair dyes. Leave it overnight for good results fro that you can cover your hairs with shower caps, Rinse your hairs with water. Henna is a very good hair conditioner also.
Here are some henna designs -

The color of henna depends upon its place of origin and the quality of plant cultivated there. The practice of applying henna varies across cultures and traditions. The designs applied on hands signify different meanings in different cultures. Each culture has its own set of distinct designs, thus defining its uniqueness. While Arabic patterns comprise of large, floral designs, the Indian designs are known for their lacy, floral, and paisley patterns sketched with fine lines. On the other hand, African and Native / South American Indian designs are characterized by bold, large geometric designs in black color.

The cost of applying the mehendi may vary from parlor to parlor and city to city.Mehndi is associated to lots of things, a good Dark Design is a sign of good luck for the marital couple. It is common for the names of the bride and groom to be hidden in the mehndi design; and the wedding night cannot commence until the groom has found the names. Some examples of popular traditional images used in mehndi designs are the peacock, which is the national bird if India, the lotus flower, and an elephant with a raised trunk, which is a symbol of good luck.

Kenzi’s experience as a henna artist is as vast as her influences. Perhaps you have seen her work in the movies (Spike Lee’s “The 25th Hour” and Jonathan Demme’s “The Manchurian Candidate) or on MTV (Erykah Badu’s video for “Love of my Life”). Kenzi has also created original pieces for photo shoots and fashion shows. Kenzi works at large-scale corporate events and festivals (such as Bulgari, HBO and Le Tigre), as well as intimate weddings, parties and private consultations. She also teaches the art of henna in workshops around New York City.

Kenzi is the President of a not-for-profit organization, HennaTribe (hennatribe.com), an artist owned collective of international, professional mehndi artists and suppliers promoting natural henna, started in September 2004. Their mission is to provide an online community, informational resource, and professional network for anyone interested in the ancient art of applying henna to skin.

The earliest cosmetic use of henna (lawsonia inermis) was in Egypt,
where the people would dye their hair and nails,
and a Pharaoh's fingers and toes would be dipped before mummification.
Once the henna plant's cooling properties were discovered,
painting the skin and dying the hair with henna became a way for the people
in desert climates to cool their body temperature.
For centuries mehndi has been practiced in Africa, India, Asia, the Middle East,
and Central Eurasia for various ceremonies and celebrations.
Today mehndi is still practiced in many diverse ways,
from eccentric body decoration, to healing ceremonies.
Mehndi is a Magical Art

Mehndi is the art of painting the body
in ornate designs with henna.
Associated with transformation and transcendence,
it is a beautiful and mysterious art form that has been used
for centuries to heal, to adorn and to bless.

A paste is made from the crushed leaves
of the henna plant mixed with other natural ingredients,
such as eucalyptus oil, lemon juice, and black tea.
The paste is applied to the skin, and when removed several hours later,
it leaves beautiful markings that last from 1 to 3 weeks.

The longevity of a mehndi design depends on many factors.
Keep in mind that each persons skin takes differently to henna,
